Over the years, there have been several players, in Chickasaw Park, that experienced cardiac arrest while on the tennis court. Most recently, in the summer of 2020, West Louisville Tennis Club (WLTC) lost one of their former Junior players, “Martez Hughes.” He was a police officer and well-loved in the Louisville community. WLTC does not have resuscitation equipment in the park, as such, they were rendered helpless until paramedics arrived.
To address this reoccurring problem and mitigate the risk of losing another life, WLTC partnered with Jefferson Community Technical College (JCTC) and provided CPR training, to all interested parties at the Chickasaw's Park Lodge. The training was held in memory of Martez Hughes on May 22, 2021.
Thanks to everyone involved as this training is a giant step towards providing unique programming that addresses the health equity needs of our tennis community. Not only does WLTC benefit but this blessing extends into the homes, businesses and social circles of the entire community!
Wave 3 News covered this important training. (Advance to the 2:14 mark)
