January 2021 President’s Letter
I am always excited for a new year and a new beginning. As I am sure we can all agree, that is even more true after what we experienced in 2020. Although the pandemic rages on, there is light at the end of the tunnel with the arrival of the Covid-19 vaccine. It is our hope that the influx of new tennis players sampling tennis will continue into 2021. The USTA Kentucky Board and staff will meet later this month and will work on ideas to continue to attract new players to tennis and find programming for the ones that just started playing in the last year. We need all our USTA Kentucky members to be ambassadors for tennis and encourage friends and family to join us in playing the best sport in the world. What other sport can tick off all the following characteristics of tennis?
Tennis is played at a distance from other players and thus is well suited for the pandemic.
Tennis provides a great workout.
Tennis is a very social sport.
Tennis only requires one other person to play.
Tennis is both an individual and team sport.
Tennis can be played by the entire family.
Tennis is played by people of all ages.
Tennis allows men and women to play against each other.
Tennis players live longer than people that play other sports.
Tennis can be played your entire life.
Tennis is the most popular individual sport in the world.
Tennis is inclusive and can be played by anyone with a desire to play.
Tennis can allow lifelong friendships to develop.
Tennis is just plain fun.
I am sure that I could go on or that you have other reasons for tennis being the greatest sport in the world. If so, please let me know, but more importantly, please let your friends and family know and invite them to join us on the courts in 2021!
At your service,
Mike Eden
USTA Kentucky Board President
