What is Tennis on Campus?
Tennis on Campus is a terrific way for former players to keep playing and bring along potential new players for a fun co-ed team activity. The requirements are the same as for adult USTA Team Tennis except only two guys and two girls are required to make a team. The Tennis on Campus Program is a partnership between the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the National Intramural, Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), and the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
With over 300,000 students playing High School tennis and only 15,000 playing College Varsity tennis, we found there to be a tremendous void in recreational tennis on campuses around the county. The intent of the USA Tennis on College Campus program is to promote and grow recreational tennis on college campuses. The USA Team Tennis program on campuses includes players from beginners through advanced players competing in Sport Club tennis. Prospective players could be from any of the following groups: Sororities, Fraternities, Residence Halls, Academic Programs, general population of students, Faculty, and Staff. All of these people have the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, relieve stress and get exercise at the same time.
Another exciting aspect of the Campus program is the USTA Team Tennis National Campus Championship. The idea of having a national tournament is to bring awareness to recreational tennis on campuses around the country. The tournament has featured co-ed team round robin play, with each match consisting of men's and women's doubles, men and women's singles and one mixed doubles match.
